NASAC

The Uganda National Academy of Sciences is an active member of the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC). NASAC is the umbrella organization representing the collective African Science Academies, and its major focus is to facilitate the scientific deliberations of African Science academies and provide support to their ongoing development. We work closely with NASAC particularly during the organization of the Annual Meeting of the African Science Academies (AMASA) which Uganda has hosted on 3 separate occasions in 2007, 2011, and 2014 (for more information on AMASA, click here).

NASIC

UNAS is an active member of the Network of Academies of Sciences in Countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference (NASIC). The Network of Academies of Sciences in Countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference (NASIC) hereinafter referred as the Network, is an autonomous scientific organization, established by Academies of Science in OIC Countries. The Network is a non-governmental, non-political and non-profit scientific organization. The general objective of the Network is to encourage and enhance collaboration and cooperation among members of the network and the scientific communities within the OIC Countries. In pursuing these objectives the Network should collaborate with other Academies inside and outside the OIC as well as with regional and international organizations concerned with problems in OIC countries.

IAP

The Uganda National Academy of Sciences is a member of the Inter-Academy Partnership, a global network of science, engineering, and medical academies that work together to provide advice on scientific, technological, and health issues. In addition to providing advice, it provides opportunities for capacity building in academies and educates the general public on matters related to science, engineering, and medicine.

UNAS has benefitted from the support of IAP on several previous studies including a study on urban health in East Africa (hyperlink), and on education systems in East Africa (hyperlink). To learn more about IAP, click here.

Partnerships

International Network for Government Science Advice

The Uganda National Academy of Sciences works with the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) through the African Regional Chapter of INGSA. INGSA serves as a platform facilitating engagement between policymakers, practitioners, national academies, and academics to share experience, build capacity, and develop theoretical and practical approaches to the use of scientific evidence in informing policy in all levels of government. We work with INGSA through the Executive Secretary, Christian Acemah who serves on the regional chapter’s governing board. To learn more about INGSA, click here

UNYA

The Uganda National Young Academy (UNYA) was launched on September 29, 2015, with the aim of raising the voice of early career researchers within the public sphere. The launch was carried out by the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS), and in attendance were representatives of Government from the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Sports, Fellows and Members of Uganda National Academy of Sciences, Young Scientists, Researchers and Medical practitioners. Mrs. Elizabeth K.M. Gabona, Director, for Higher, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (HTVET) represented the Minister of State for Higher Education, Science and Technology as the guest of honour.

The UNYA is part of the wider network of National Young Academies worldwide, and so the launch was also attended by a member of The Global Young Academy, Dr. Fridah Erastus Kanana from Kenyatta University

RASP

The Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) provides the Secretariat for the RASP SCE. The Research, Academia, Science and Professional Associations (RASP) constituency is one of the twelve constituencies of the Uganda AIDS Partnership (UAC). The concept of SCEs implies that the constituency, with support and facilitation from the AIDS Partnership and the Uganda AIDS Commission, takes responsibility for the coordination of its own response to the epidemic. The role of the SCE is, among others, to share information, collect input and give feedback on issues to be raised in the partnership, and nurture and facilitate peer support among members to deliver on the research issues of the National Strategic Framework.
